On September 11, 2012 our Embassy in Benghazi, Libya was attacked in a deliberate. calculated, planned operation by the terrorist group Ansar al-Sharia. All embassies are considered by international law as the soil of the nation whose flag flies over the building. This was the land of the United States of America that was assaulted. In short an act of war was committed against us by this terrorist group.
Now over six weeks after this dastardly attack questions are being raised. We know that the group of four men including two former Navy Seals, our Ambassador plus another employee held out for over seven hours before being killed. Despite the Obama administration’s prevarications, much could have been done to save these brave four men from these savage jihadists.
First of all, there was according to Retired Col. David Hunt a real time live hook up between the Embassy and the Pentagon, State Department, CIA, and the White House. Over 100 people listened to the battle unfolding stage by stage. Yet they did nothing to try and aid our Embassy personel.
Could we have done anything ? Most assuredly we had a variety of options available.
About 420 miles away at the Naval Air Station in Sigonella (southern Italy) we had a squadron of F-18 Hornets. The Hornet has a top speed of 1200 miles per hours. Let’s assume that it would take at least one hour to fuel and prep the aircraft. By flying at a mere 800 mph that would have placed the Hornets over the target in one and a half hours. Two Hornets with cluster bombs could have broken the back of the attack.
Also at the Sigonella airfield we had a Spectre AC-130 gunship with a flying speed of 450 mph. The Spectre gunship is formidable weapons platform. It mounts two 7.62 mm mini-guns, one Bofors 40 mm automatic cannon plus a 105 mm howitzer. Prep time would have been about an hour plus another hour to fly to Benghazi. It would have arrived in two hours. These weapons can be aimed with great precision. Just the mini-gun alone can put a bullet in every square yard of a football field in 4 seconds. Plus it could have loitered over the battlefield for three or four hours keeping an air umbrella of deadly fire avaible.
Then there is the Sixth Fleet which includes a carrier battle group which is stationed in the Mediterranean Sea. Now we don’t know where the carrier was at the time, but it is standard operating procedure to keep armed, fueled Hornets on the carrier deck ready to take off in just a few minutes. Also, nearly every surface ship now carries cruise missiles. Some of those ships were within 300 miles of Benghazi. A cruise missile flies at at a speed of 550 mph. Again, a salvo of four cruise missiles would have negated the terrorists. All of these options could have been used within that seven hour window when our people were still alive.
There is one asset we didn’t have. Leaders who have the moral compass to act decisively and forcefully. We have just sent a signal to every rag tag, fourth string Islamic terrorist group in the world. The message is you can treat America with impunity and get away with it. We also, unfortunately, sent a strong message to our troops and defenders. You are expendable: Don’t count on our government to watch your back. We will leave you behind to suffer a hideous fate. So much for the miltary dictum of leaving no man behind that our military
has espoused for decades.
Obama fiddled while Benghazi burned. During the height of the battle the Annointed One went to sleep. After all, he needed his beauty rest for a hard day of campaigning in Las Vegas the next day. Obama has lied, and people have died. The American people need to rise up in righteous indignation on Election Day and throw this lying, conniving scoundrel out!
